- Remove dirt and dust first with a brush, microfiber cloth or vacuum.
- Don’t be shy with your cleaning solution – give your windows a good soaking. If you have hard-to-remove gunk like bird droppings, spray it thoroughly and then give it about 10 minutes to sink in.
- Avoid using a squeegee if you are cleaning the inside of your windows (this causes puddles of water indoors) or if you have small windows (it’s just awkward). A microfiber cloth will work just fine.
- Wipe one side of your windows vertically and the other side horizontally. If you have streaks, then you know exactly which side of the window they are on!
Clean Your Appliances
Appliances work hard all year round, and if they aren’t working in the winter then chances are that they have been gathering dust.
- Clothes dryer – A clogged dryer vent is a serious issue that can cause a house fire. Luckily, cleaning the vent is easy! Simply unplug your dryer and open the vent. You can usually remove most of the fluff by hand and the smaller bits by using a vacuum or soft brush.
- Refrigerator and air conditioning coils – These appliances circulate air through specialized coils in order to cool it down. You’ll want both of these appliances working as efficiently and as effectively as possible when the heat sets in, so these coils need to be clean and free of dust. First, unplug the appliance. Then vacuum the coils with your vacuum’s crevice tool and a damp microfiber cloth. Leave it to dry and then plug back in about 5-10 minutes later.
- Ceiling fans – These probably didn’t see much use in the winter, so have likely gathered some dust. The last thing you want is to switch on your fan on a hot day and have dust flying everywhere! Simply vacuum and wipe down with a damp microfiber cloth. Also, if you did reverse your fans for winter, make sure to change to the correct direction for summer.
Clear Your Gutters
Ideally, this should be done before the rainy season begins. When clogged gutters fill with rain, they overflow and can cause leaks in your roof, mold growth in the guttering, and even damage to your home’s foundations.
It’s easy to clean your gutters using a ladder. Just put on a pair of gloves and scoop out the leaves and sticks that have gathered over the winter, making sure your ladder is firmly planted on the ground. You can also use a gutter cleaning robot or call your local handyman to help you out.
