How to Make the Best Use of Space in a Small Nursery

Nursery | sell your home privately

Decorating a nursery takes plenty of creativity – not just to come up with an enjoyable space for your little one, but to maximize storage. After all, babies come with an absolutely massive amount of stuff and the average nursery space isn’t very generous at all! Here are some tips from our Dallas real estate agents who can also help you sell your home privately if you end up deciding you need a bigger space to fit your growing family.

Look for Combo Furniture

Gone are the days when every nursery needed a bulky piece of furniture to meet each of your baby’s needs – these days, you can find some really clever combo furniture that’s designed specifically for small nursery spaces. For example, you can get mini cribs with crib-top changing stations – a comfy, portable tray that securely sits on top of the crib when in use, and slides under the crib when you don’t need it.

And speaking of mini cribs, they’re a great idea for small nurseries! Your little one really won’t need much space to sleep, so a big crib will just take up more room. Once they’re happy to sleep without a crib, you can move straight on to a toddler bed. You can also get some great cribs that transform into toddler beds – a space-saving and cost-saving buy!

Look for Unused Space

There is loads of space to be found even in a small room if you know where to look. Crib raised off the floor? Clear it out and install some woven baskets for storage. Nursery door swings inwards? Get it re-fitted to swing outwards or replace it with a slide door so that you can use that space behind the door. You can also install an over-the-door storage rack (these usually just hook onto the top of the door) to hang all sorts of goodies like nappies, clothing, blankets and toys.

Don’t Forget to Look Up

Walls offer some great storage and decorating opportunities too, so consider painting a mural, hanging a picture, or hanging fairy lights to add softness and character. In terms of storage, you can use the walls for traditional shelving or go for something more unusual and less permanent like hanging fabric storage cubbies or peg boards (these are great for fun pictures and accessories as well as important documents and schedules). If you’re renting, these are also great because they minimize damage to your walls while still letting you decorate and use the space fully.

Modify Your Closet Space

In some homes, the nursery space could be mistaken for a closet itself, but if you’re lucky enough to have a built-in closet, you can easily double your storage space by adding a second rail (staggered forward and downward by several inches from the top rail) and bringing the rails closer together.

Most baby clothing is easier to store in drawers, so raising the rail means you can install drawers and shelves easily while still keeping some hanging space available. If you don’t want to permanently alter your closet, you can add “drawers” in the form of free-standing plastic or wooden units that you can slide into the closet. We love units with a clear plastic front, as you can see exactly what’s inside them without having to open them up.

You can further modify your closet space by taking the door off and storing it elsewhere, as this opens up a lot of space that the door would take up when you open and close it. Hang a curtain rail and a pretty curtain up to hide away the closet clutter while still making it easy to access.

If you have enough storage in your nursery thanks to your crib, changing station and other furniture that you don’t need your closet, you could even remove it fully and repurpose the space to fit the crib! This is a great option that makes your nursery lovely and cozy, keeping the crib in a snug little nook and freeing up floor space for a play area or nursing chair. You can transform the space by hanging soft curtains across the nook and completing the look with a mobile.
